K-Drama Review: My Love From Another Star (별에서 온 그대)

we w

I know this is an old one, and I have watched it previously before this post, but, I’m sorry, I gotta talk about it cause it is blog post worthy, people. This drama came out in 2013, so almost five years ago at this point. The cast has Kim Soo Hyun, Jeon Ji Hyun, Park Hae Jin, and Yoo In Na (who is also in Goblin) in it. They play Do Min Joon (도민준) Cheon Song Yi (천송이), Lee Hee Kyung (이휘경) and Yoo Se Mi (유세미). If you haven’t watched this drama yet, you absolutely must. It is funny and witty, yet heart-wrenching at the same time. It is everything that I expect from a K-Drama, but it is also more because guess what guys, I’ve watched it multiple times and cried, and laugh every single time it never gets old, as well as get my father who is still a Korea newbie to sit down and watch this with me. Also, this drama will be known from this point forward as “Planet Guy”, as that is what my father has dubbed it.

We watched this drama on DramaFever, but I know that you can also watch it on Kocowa as well.

Things to Know about this Drama:

  • It has 21 episodes that they call records
  • The general plot is that Do Min Joon (Kim Soo Hyun) is an alien from another planet who has been stranded on earth for the last 400 years whose people will finally be able to return to rescue him. This is his last 3 months on earth. Cheon Song Yi (Jeon Ji Hyun) is a famous actress who moves in next door to him. Lee Hee Kyung and Yoo Se Mi are both friends with Cheon Song Yi from middle school. Lee Hee Kyung is the heir to a company called S&C (cause no Korean drama would be complete without some sort of company drama).
  • You get a serious love triangle… square…octagon? I don’t know what shape it is. Yoo Se Mi has been in love with Lee Hee Kyung since middle school. Lee Hee Kyung has been chasing after Cheon Song Yi since middle school, and frequently goes to Yoo Se Mi for advice. Meanwhile, Cheon Song Yi is falling in love with her next-door neighbor, Do Min Joon. Through this entire time, Lee Hee Kyung’s brother Jae Kyung is a psychopath who is secretly trying to annihilate like all of them.
  • Despite all of the drama with the “love shapes” and the murdering/annihilation thing, the drama knows exactly how to make you laugh in the middle of all of it. Of course, two minutes later it has you crying and freaking out all over again… ITS A ROLLER COASTER OF EMOTIONS, PEOPLE!
  • The actor and character development are fantastic. All of the relationships between the characters feel so natural and real, so you get emotionally attached very quickly.
  • You will truly find the characters identifiable. You will be able to find little bits of yourself in each of the characters. Between Cheon Song Yi’s quirky personality, Do Min Joon’s caring but also stand-offish nature, Lee Hee Kyung’s unending devotion for those he cares about, and Yoo Se Mi’s desire to hold onto those she cares about, no matter what it costs her. There is something for absolutely everyone.

K-Points: 500/5

If a drama can get my to burst into tears not just the first time I watch it, but also the second time, then I think it definitely get a 500 score because you know the whole plot, you know how everything pans out, but it still breaks your heart and creates this sense of longing through the whole drama.  It has you yelling and screaming at the characters (in Korean for the most part) at least once every single episode.

This drama also happens to be what I will now dub my dad’s “breakthrough” into the K-Drama world. He only watched the second half of the drama, but every time the episode was over he would say to me “Okay, one more, I have to know what happens next!” My next goal is to get him to watch 도깨비 (Goblin) because I know he will love all of it from start to finish. If it can hook my father into saying “Rachel, you cannot watch the rest without me!”, it will do the same to you. Now if he does watch Goblin with me, I will totally start taking notes on all of the things he says throughout the drama and write a whole post on it. It will be something you will all want to read, as it will be amusing.

This drama, as my dad would probably agree, is definitely a must-see, K-Nuggets.

사랑합니다!
