GOT7 Present: You Review

GOT Present You

I am so excited that GOT7 is back. After seeing them perform in concert this summer, I was looking forward to what they were going to do next. When GOT7 Present: You was announced, I was very excited. Since GOT7 has taken over writing their own music, I have been a huge fan of the direction they have chosen. It has a bit of funk and soul to it and makes me melt in my chair.

You can pick up a copy of this album from Choice Music for $21.99 plus shipping and handling here. There are 8 versions of the album and they are completely random, so you don’t know which version you will get when you order it. Off of Amazon, you can order a copy for $22.97, plus free shipping here. It is probably a few dollars cheaper than Choice, but it may not be as fast on the shipping.

If you don’t have Amazon Prime, you can get a 30 day free trial using this link here. I will not lie, the free 2 day shipping, plus all of the free music and videos are totally worth it. I also now use it for books for my Kindle paper white too, and it is honestly a life saver. They have a program called Kindle Unlimited where you can check out 10 books at a time, read them, and put them back in the kindle library. The program cost $7.99 a month, and you get the first 30 days for free with this link.

For the purposes of reading the remainder of this post, I recommend that you put the album on in the background, and read through it while listening to the track that I am talking about. This is what I recommend for all of my song reviews.

GOT7 Present: You Track by Track:

Lullaby

I am not going to lie, I love this track. It is funky, it has soul,  and it has flair. I have no idea how to describe the genre of this song. I am not a genre expert, but it is a mix between one of those smooth sounding club songs you hear and makes you want to dance. You may also hear it at a roller disco. Either way, I’m dancing. It may look a little bit like the below image, but I’m doing it!

I love the instrumentation of this track. It has a strong bass and guitar line, and I want to play it on repeat. As you all probably guessed, this track did make it into my playlist.

Enough

The first thing that I want to note about this track as I’m listening to it is the harmonies that they use. The balance on them is fantastic. The melody is still strong enough that you can hear it, and the harmonies reinforce the lyrics. Other thoughts on this track: I like how they have another dance, upbeat track. I love how the chorus drops. The beat for this track is sick. I am not going to lie. I’m seriously feeling it.

지켜줄게 (I’ll protect you)

Taking the tempo down a bit for this track. I like how they have added a consistent theme throughout all the tracks of that synth sound to this point. This has been contrasted by shifts in tempo, as well as different percussion. I don’t like the transition into the chorus on this track. What I do love: Those notes that Youngjae hits in the beginning of the chorus, and the harmonies that they use to balance it. I can tell this track is hard to sing for the singers in the group because it seems to be causing all of them to switch into falsetto. They aren’t even able to go for a blend. This song isn’t one of my favorites on here. I like it, but not enough to pull it into one of my playlists.

No One Else

I must say, the guitar and tambourine in this track… FIYAH… Like full on:

Okay, that’s BTS, but you get the gist. I really like the chorus of this track. It is repetitive, but very percussive. The guitar and the vocal rhythms match, and I totally dig it. It has continuity. Additionally, in this song, the switches to falsetto do not phase me as much. I feel like they fit a bit better for this song than they did in the last song, partially because they aren’t doing as many of them as they did in the last track.

I Am Me

What do I love about this track? I like the beat drop in the chorus, and that high pitched synth sound. The chorus is simple: I am me, I am an idiot. The song has a good message though. It is all about accepting yourself for who you are, and loving yourself. Also, not caring about what others think. I feel it. The song has a nice even feel to it. Jinyoung and his cowriter did a good job on this track. You can easily hear that he had a hand in writing this one.

Sunrise

This is the last track before we get into the individual member tracks. I like how before they move to that section they take it down for a ballad in a true R&B style. This track has an interesting blend between feeling like it would have been released 15 years ago, and being released today. Like I can hear Usher producing a similar song 15 years ago, but with a slightly different back track. I love the falsetto chorus in this track, as most of the chorus is falsetto instead of just a one note switch. Much approved, guys.

OMW (Mark feat. Jackson)

I like Mark’s down tempo rap track. I also love how he just yells his name before he starts rapping. It actually made me chuckle. It’s like smooth beat and then “Mark”. Another thing I really enjoy about this track is that a lot of it is in English, which is great for American fans. I also think this is one of the first times that I have ever heard Mark sing, which is interesting. I don’t consider him to be a singer, but he does have pitch, which is good. He chose a very simple, easy melody to sing. I also enjoy the Jackson verse as well. Good job guys!

Made It (Jackson)

This track is exactly what I expected from Jackson. It hard hitting, and compelling. I love how he incorporated some traditional Chinese instruments in the track as well. It showcases his culture a bit. I also love the strings and trumpets brought into the chorus, and the beat is hard. I honestly think that Jackson is the best rapper in the group. He has the most “swag”, he can rip it quickly, and his voice is also perfect for rapping (No offense Mark… I love you too) This track totally made it into my playlist. It is lit, and I’m seriously feeling it. Good job ripping Fire, Jackson.

My Youth (Jinyoung)

As soon as this track starts you can tell it is a Jinyoung track. It sounds like something that popped out of JJ Project Verse 2. The track, for some reason reminds me of a track I would have listened to when I was younger, like something from Vanessa Carlton. It’s easy listening with a bit of light guitar, easy drum rhythm and nice simple chords. I really dig this track, as it feels like an extension of Verse 2 which I LOVED. This track made it into my ballads playlist.

혼자 (Nobody Knows) (Youngjae)

I really love Youngjae’s singing voice. I think he has a lot of power, and can really pop up those high notes. That being said, when the octave jumps in the track before the chorus, in my opinion, he goes too into it without focusing on dynamics. In the chorus, the switch is fantastic, but before that, I think it is too much, and it subtracts from the song. Still love Youngjae, and I love his voice. He is an amazing singer, but falsetto would have been better there for the emotional factor. Jinyoung uses falsetto very well.  Despite that, I still really enjoy this track. That one little tweak would have made it perfect though.

Party (Bambam)

Bambam dance track that is highly expected from him. I can hear the dabbing moments for him. This track sounds like something I could hear on the soundtrack for Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. The lyrics are very simple, but the beat sounds like something you would hear at a gay bar, or at a roller skating rink, where people are disco-ing. This is also an excellent song for some whacking or voguing… things I learn about from Korean Television. Decent song, but I don’t have a playlist that this one would fit into, as I do not have a RuPaul playlist, but man is that a good idea…

Fine (Yugyeom)

Okay, the disonance at the beginning of this track is so eerie and creepy, and I love it. This track is exactly what I would expect from Yugyeom as he can easily make one of his smooth dances with those fast spins to this track. It has lots of hard pauses too for locking moves (more terms I learn from Korean Television) because of the trap beat that he’s got going on. I totally love this song, but yet again, do not have a playlist that this fits it… I think i need more playlists.

K-Points: 437/5

So, I’m not going to give this album 528 K-Points, because I wasn’t blown away, but I did greatly enjoy it. I love their single off of this album, and I love a number of the other tracks on it. It is nice smooth listening, and it has a number of different sounds on it. On top of all of that, I love how the title track has been produced in Korean, English, Spanish, and Chinese to cater to their broad international fanbase. I think it is AMAZING.

Should you buy a copy of this album? I personally think absolutely. GOT7 are such a high energy and fun group that you wouldn’t regret it. On top of that, this album is pretty long too, with tracks in multiple languages. It’s totally rad. Can you just stream it? Yes and I highly recommend you do because it is pretty good!
