Album Review: The Rose (더 로즈) Void

the rose

Smaller group being posted on today. I had originally heard of The Rose from a vlog on Jae from Day6’s Youtube, JaeSix, cause he’s stupidly clever like that. I then listened to their first single, Sorry, and was quite impressed. Count me a fan. When I found out they were working on producing a mini album through a kickstarter website called Makestar, I had to buy one, cause let’s support good music.

Once my copy of the album gets here, you will be seeing it.

Let’s get into it.

The Rose Void, Track by Track:

  1. Candy (So Good): I really enjoy the chill, British rock feel that this track has. They have a really good riff going through that track that keeps your attention. The general gist of the song is a guy who is in love with a girl so much that she is like candy. It honestly is a cute song. I can hear myself listening to this song on a sunny day, sitting in a park, just lazing about. I also really enjoy the group’s singing style. It’s interesting and different. You can tell that they weren’t classically trained, and they really work that rock vibe. What this means is that you probably won’t hear me critique their vocals too much, because I’m not as familiar with their style.
  2. Baby: Another bop, with a positive feel to it. I really enjoy how this track progresses. It starts out soft with just a singer and a piano, and then builds into the chorus, slowly adding instruments one by one. When the full drum kit kicks in by the chorus (not just the kick drum) the track is really moving. I also really enjoy the slightly electronic element that they add to the track (until you get to the end of the song when I feel like it is assaulting my ears). This song also really highlights the group’s bassist, and I live for a good baseline. Thus far, they are impressing me.
  3. I.L.Y.: We have entered ballad city. The song starts of with some piano chords, and then the singer comes in. The song has a bit of a solemn, desperate feel to it… It makes me feel so sad. Like listening to it, I can just feel their emotions sweeping into the track. This track is a perfect example of how a song doesn’t need to be complicated to be a good song. It is simple, but the emotion is there. They play with the instrumentation and the vocal styling to get that perfect minor chord song.
  4. Sorry: Okay, I have heard this song before, it has been out for months. I still like it. When I listen to this song, I really feel like this group excels at those rip your heart to shred songs. To be honest, it is their tone and their performance style. I don’t know if they would excel at super happy songs, but I’m dying to hear them try. Side note about this song: I sent it to my friend and told her to listen to it, and she said, “why do people always write songs about being sorry? If I write a song, it will be called ‘You Should Be’.” I died. It was magical.
  5. Like We Used To:  Another slightly depressing and sad song. This track is another one that sounds like a guy apologizing for the mistakes that were made in the past, and then the girl would forgive him because she hears his pretty song about how much he misses her. This song is just all about moving on from a relationship. They seem to write lots of songs like this, and I do like it, but this will not be a Friday track for me, it’s too depressing, man.

K-Points: 466/5

So far, what I have heard from The Rose has me impressed. It may only be 5 tracks so far, but they have developed a distinct sound and style that I can definitely see catching on with a lot of people. I really want to see how the group progresses as time goes on. Things I want to see from The Rose: a full uptempo track, stronger harmonies (as if you noticed I didn’t comment on them at all, and I live for those), more killer bass lines, and the lead singer to have more vocal training, as you can tell he doesn’t have much. I’m not 100% blown away, but I see potential there.

Should you buy a copy of the album? 100% up to you. Should you stream it? Totally. Give them a listen, I think you’ll be surprised like I was. I just hope that they don’t fall into that hole of British rock all day er’y day.

Have you listened to The Rose yet? What do you think? Let me know in the comments below, K-Nuggets!
