Album Review: JBJ True Colors – EP

jbj true colors

It took about a full day for Apple music to get this album up online in America, but it finally came up, so I’m going to talk about it, and tell you what I think about every single track one by one of the JBJ True Colors -EP. JBJ is a group created by the fans after Produce 101 Season 2 ended, and these guys didn’t get selected for Wanna One. This is their second EP. I listened through the first one again a few days ago and enjoyed it, but now it’s time for my thoughts on the one that was just released!

I do a lot of my album shopping on Music Plaza LA. Additionally, if you have never used Music Plaza before, this link will get you an extra 5% off of your first purchase!

You can also order a copy of the album from an eBay, as they typically have good prices. Plus, with eBay, you can save a little bit of money by using the E-Bates extension on your browser, as it will save you 2% on all album purchases, which definitely adds up.

What is E-Bates?

E-Bates is a cashback site that gives you money for purchases you may have already made. They even have an extension for multiple browsers so when you go to a website that uses Ebates, it will automatically pop up the cashback button to make sure you are saving money. I use this all the time, and I got over 80$ back from them for purchases I was going to make anyway. That’s about 3 more albums I can buy!

If you’ve never used EBates before, you can use this link to get $10 when making a qualified purchase of $25 when using EBates. You will also get whatever percent cashback is being offered from the site you are purchasing from.  Sephora, typically has 4% cashback, through here. Sokoglam typically has 3%. These percentages Many other major retailers are on there as well.

JBJ True Colors, Track by Track:

  1. True Colors: The album starts off with a song that has a bit of a dance beat behind it, but it’s more of like a “slo-mo” dance beat if that makes sense. Like you could do a modern dance routine to this song. I enjoy the beat of the song, but it isn’t one of my favorites, and the vocals aren’t that strong either, in my opinion.  I don’t think any of the singers or rappers in this group are particularly stellar, but it’s hard to be stellar when you aren’t given a song that you can be stellar on. I Think this song would have had more of an impact if it was less electronic, and they focused more on the layers of harmonies that the boys made instead of creating a beat.
  2. On My Mind: We have taken it down to a full ballad for this song. Yet again, this song is only average. It isn’t one that will make it into my playlist, as there isn’t anything about it that makes it stand out in my mind. On top of that, it sounds so similar to the first track, that it could be almost the same thing. They used similar instrumentation, similar break in parts, and the vocals are similar too. This song just doesn’t strike me at all, which has me quite disappointed. Give me something to be excited over.
  3. My Flower: Finally I am getting a slight change in a song. Still not very drastic, but there is a slight different present. I do actually like this song on it’s own. It has a catchy chorus that you can dance (나는 너를 꽃이야!) . I like how it has piano layered into the song to contrast with the electric beat they have going on. The song has a bit of flow to it. I like it. Is it stellar? Absolutely not. It still sounds a bit like everything that came before, but it’s different enough to distinguish it as a new song.
  4. Moonlight: Yet again, not a fan of this song, It sounds too much like all of the songs that came before it. They all use a similar style of drum, similar descant in whatever that electronic sound is that they have going on, They all have the same structure to them. At this point, I am honestly convinced that one person wrote all of the songs up until this point in about fifteen minutes to get a little bit of cash.
  5. Wonderful Day: I think the theme has continued here. Did they decide to have a theme going of songs that all sound alike one after the other or am I being Punk’d? Can they give me some variance in the album? Like all of it feels like it is mid-tempo with not very well defined harmonies and very similar back beats that you could probably change out on the songs and not be able to tell.
  6. Every Day: Okay, they finally gave us some serious tempo variation, but the tempo variation that they gave bores me. When you have a group like this I at least expect you to play with the harmonies a bit. That’s what ballads are great for! It sounds like everything is being sung in unison, and if it isn’t they did a terrible job of sound mixing on here. I’m seriously disappointed, and I feel like i’m listening to a high school performance of some kind instead of an album from professional music artists.

K-Crack Scale: 12/5

To be 100% honest, this release is extremely underwhelming. All of the songs sound almost exactly the same, as if they were written in about 20 minutes. They are all extremely lackluster. As I kept listening to the album, I honestly was getting angry that companies think it is okay to put out this for people to listen to. It’s not fair to the artists who are going to get slammed in reviews.

Should you buy this album? Absolutely not. Did I still buy it? Yes, because I’m writing a review on the packaging of it once I get it in the mail as I want to be fair. Am I still waiting for 2018 to give me a good release? 100% yes, and I hope I get one soon because right now my K-Pop soul is crumbling. I’m going to need reviving soon if I get any more of this.

Will my soul be saved soon, K-Nuggets?

사랑합니다!
