Album Review: HEIZE (헤이즈) Wish & Wind – EP

heize jenga mv still

It’s later than usual, I know, but, HEIZE has magically become one of those artists that I really enjoy. Her music is different, but definitely resonates with me. After she released /// (너 먹구름 비) You, Clouds, Rain and 널너무모르고, I have become quite a fan of HEIZE. Her singing and music style are very calming, and this EP is no exception. She really uses Jazz chords and funk chords and patterns through the whole EP, and I love it.

I also do a lot of my album shopping on Music Plaza LA. Additionally, if you have never used Music Plaza before, this link will get you an extra 5% off of your first purchase!

You can also order a copy of the album from an eBay, as they typically have good prices. Plus, with eBay, you can save a little bit of money by using the E-Bates extension on your browser, as it will save you 2% on all album purchases, which definitely adds up.

What is E-Bates?

E-Bates is a cashback site that gives you money for purchases you may have already made. They even have an extension for multiple browsers so when you go to a website that uses Ebates, it will automatically pop up the cashback button to make sure you are saving money. I use this all the time, and I got over 80$ back from them for purchases I was going to make anyway. That’s about 3 more albums I can buy!

If you’ve never used EBates before, you can use this link to get $10 when making a qualified purchase of $25 when using EBates. You will also get whatever percent cashback is being offered from the site you are purchasing from.  Sephora, typically has 4% cashback, through here. Sokoglam typically has 3%. These percentages Many other major retailers are on there as well.

HEIZE Wish & Wind, Track by Track:

  1. Jenga (feat. 개코): The first track starts with an uptempo jazz sound to it, with some “jazz drums” (they’re like Jazz Hands but noisier) thrown in, and when the first verse gets started, a guitar gets added in. Overall, the title track has a very smooth sound. I enjoy it. It sounds like something that you would here in some sort of bar or coffee shop in the evening. Another thing I really like about this track, and the whole EP, in general, is that it is a distinctively different sound from what she released previously. On top of all of that, she has the perfect voice for a jazz style. I am personally of the belief that jazz is a genre that not everyone can pull off, as it requires a very specific sound and connection with oneself that some artists don’t have. She’s got it. She pulls it off.
  2.  But, Are You?: The second track still has a chill sound, with a lot of piano to it, but not as jazzy as the previous track. I would consider this a mid-tempo song, and it actually sounds to me like a song you would hear in some more modern musicals, like Next to Normal (it’s a strange show, but very good). I think the track really showcases her vocal range as she goes back and forth between rap, and singing the choruses. This track really shows how she is a jack of all trades and can sing a variety of styles (although I never want to hear her sing a straight-up pop song. I don’t think that would be her forte).
  3. Didn’t Know Me: Taking it down even further with a true ballad. The lyrics in this song talk about how she gave someone everything, and they still didn’t really know much about her. I can understand the sentiment. I think most people can. On top of that, this song sounds like it would be a blast to sing up on a stage with just an acoustic guitar, piano and a  microphone. The song has a very chill, laid back sound, very much like the whole mini-album.
  4. wish you well (with DAVII): Another slow tempo, more Jazz and R&B song. She has moved on from a “what the heck, I gave you it all” song to a “fine by me, peace out” song. This song also features DAVII who I greatly approve of vocally. His vocals are very solid and fit the R&B style. Although I like the song, it didn’t make my playlist, as it isn’t something I would be excited to hear if it came up at random.
  5. Wind: I really love the jazz piano interlude that she added to the mini-album. I think it is an added touch that completes the vibes of the album. And when I heard it the first time I was really vibing. Other than liking the song, I don’t have much else to say about it, as it’s only a minute and a half long.
  6. Sorry: Once you hear the last track, the addition of the jazz piano solo makes more sense, as it helps bridge the sound gap between wish you well and Sorry. Honestly, I feel that Sorry is a perfect way to end the album. It is a song that feels final, like a song at the end of a musical, or how a song a the end of an album should feel, it isn’t so slow that it has you feeling like, well, that was… depressing? It also isn’t so uptempo that you are like but I want more. It’s a good song, and it did make it into my playlist, so there’s that.

K-Points: 492/5

I love the sound of this mini-album, and I think it has situations when it is perfect. I would not listen to this album when attempting to exercise, but it is absolutely perfect for when you are trying to do work, write something, just chill out, whatever. It has its place in my music repertoire.

Do you need a copy of this in your collection? You can probably just stream it, but I definitely did purchase it after listening to it, as I did truly enjoy it, even if it is just because the special edition had a Jenga game in it. At the end of the day, I think that this mini-album is a great one, and also for all of you who wants something new to listen to, it is a great choice that will expand your music genres and repertoire.
