Since I haven’t really written too many posts besides my Unboxing of DAY6’s Moonrise album, you all are probably not aware that I am actually quite a big Day6 fan. Naturally, when I heard that Day6 Shoot Me was being released, I had to listen. I really like Day6’s sound overall, and to be honest, there isn’t a song of theirs that I dislike.
Since I like all of their music, pre-ordering a copy of this was a no-brainer. I preordered both versions of the album off of Choice Music for $32.99 plus shipping here. You can also order one version of the album for $16.99 plus shipping here. Off of Amazon, the 2 version set is $43.90 here and 1 versoin is $23.90 here. Both have free shipping for Prime members.
If you don’t have Amazon Prime, you can get a 30 day free trial using this link here. I will not lie, the free 2 day shipping, plus all of the free music and videos are totally worth it. I also now use it for books for my Kindle paper white too, and it is honestly a life saver. They have a program called Kindle Unlimited where you can check out 10 books at a time, read them, and put them back in the kindle library. The program cost $7.99 a month, and you get the first 30 days for free with this link.
I have already listened through the album at least 15 times, so let’s get into it.
Day6 Shoot Me Track By Track:
WARNING!
This song starts out with some really heavy guitar, and it actually sounds a little bit like something I would hear from Panic! at the Disco in the olden days, or Simple Plan, who were two of my favorite artists growing up. I really like the guitar chords that they use throughout the track, as well as the heavy drums. They also use some pretty strong harmonies through the whole song. I was actually reminded of how many strong singers Day6 has while listening to this track: Wonpil, Young K, Jae, and SungJin. I don’t know if Dowoon sings. I’ve never heard it, but his dance moves are definitely one of his strengths (google it).
Shoot Me
Okay, I really love this title track! It has a ton of character. Yet again, this is another track that reminds me of my youth, as I feel like I have reached old lady status at the ripe age of 25. It really has a Panic! At the Disco vibe to it, which is something I love. Panic has managed to survive all of these years as a band that I still enjoy, so Day6 having similar vibes makes me happy. Overall, I really love how this song moves. When the chorus comes in and you get the hardcore guitar coming in, it makes me happy. It has a wonderful contrast from the high tenor vocals. Additionally, I love the bridge of the song and how it is English hushed vocals. This is in all of my playlists.
어쩌다 보니 (Somehow)
This is actually my favorite track on the mini-album. I really love the major chords they use throughout the track, It is a good contrast from the first two tracks where they had more dissonance with the chords they chose. If you do not know what dissonance is, it is the clashing sound that you hear between notes in minor chords that gives it that slightly pained, sad sound. This song on the other hand, has an extremely positive sound to it. I don’t know how to describe how they modified the piano chords in the beginning that gives it the muted, off of an old record sound, but I really love it. Overall, I just like how simple this track is. It uses what many would consider typical instrumental chord progressions, but it’s pleasant to listen to. Who cares about being original when something is nice to listen to. This is in all of my playlists.
Feeling Good
I really love the guitar that they used in the beginning of this track. I think it really helps add to the positive feel of this song. When they add in the synth strings on top of it, and then the rhythmic clapping, I dig it. I really like how the track progresses and how the full guitar, bass and drums do not come in until the chorus, and then drop out of the end of the chorus so that all that remains is the initial guitar sound. I like how it takes us back to square one before rebuilding the instrumentation in the track. One more note on this track, I think they did a very good job of adding in harmonies at the appropriate places.
혼잣말 (Talking to)
The opening of this track sounds like something from the Beach Boys, which then shifts into something much more modern when the drums come in. Although this isn’t my favorite track on the album, I do still enjoy it. Musically, I do not have any complaints about it. I like the song and chord progression. Harmony wise, the track is also solid. The song just doesn’t resonate with me like some other tracks on the album. It’s still good, and I like how it fits into the album, as it definitely has it’s place. It will not be making it into my playlist though. It just isn’t my personal taste.
원하니까 (Still)
Final track on Day6 Shoot Me is a ballad. The track has a strong synth sound, and they swapped to an acoustic guitar for the track. They also used a standard piano for the sound. I’m not sure what I think of the synth sound. It doesn’t fit the track in my opinion. I think it actually subtracts from the effectiveness of the ballad. Once the track switches to using electric guitars, It doesn’t bother me anymore, as it seems to match better. Despite that, per usual, their vocals are quite strong. They have some strong ooh and aah’s occurring in the background. I also enjoy how they add and subtract electric guitar and bass. Solid song, once you get past the synth.
K-Points: 487/5
I’m going to be 100% honest, I really enjoy this album! There isn’t a song that I dislike on it. I even told my musician friend in Japan to give it a listen, and I don’t tell him to listen to just anything. I only have him listen to things I really enjoy, like SHINee. So, me giving this to him is big. I will note, he loves SHINee so much now that he saw them in concert. Despite all of that though, the last two tracks had a few things that didn’t resonate with me, which is why some points were deducted from the album.
Since points were deducted, do that mean I shouldn’t buy the album? No, you should still buy the album. Overall, it is really good, but when I write these reviews, I am extremely nitpick-y. It is still a good album. I really enjoy it. Can you just stream it? Absolutely. It is quite good, as I felt like I was waiting for their comeback for AGES. I’m happy it is finally here!
