Day6 Remember Us: Youth Part 2 Review

Day Remember Us

Now that the boys of Day6 are done with their world tour, they are gracing our ears with brand new music! They have come back to us with Day6 Remember Us: Youth Part 2. Youth part 1, Shoot Me was released back at the end of June. You can read my thoughts on the music here and my unboxing here. As you can tell, I was definitely a fan of the last album, and am greatly looking forward to this one.

I couldn’t decide which copy of the album that I wanted to have, so I ordered both copies of the album from an eBay seller in Korea. This is a link to the exact one I’ve ordered. I got both copies for $39.88 plus free shipping. Plus, with eBay, you can save a little bit of money by using the E-Bates extension on your browser, as it will save you 2% on all album purchases, which definitely adds up.

What is E-Bates?

E-Bates is a cashback site that gives you money for purchases you may have already made. They even have an extension for multiple browsers so when you go to a website that uses Ebates, it will automatically pop up the cashback button to make sure you are saving money. I use this all the time, and I got over 80$ back from them for purchases I was going to make anyways. That’s about 3 more albums I can buy!

If you’ve never used EBates before, you can use this link to get $10 when making a qualified purchase of $25 when using EBates. You will also get whatever percent cashback is being offered from the site you are purchasing from.  Sephora, typically has 4% cashback, through here. Sokoglam typically has 3%. These percentages Many other major retailers are on there as well.

Can I get it on Amazon?

Yes! You can pick up a copy using this link here for $23 dollars (not as good of a deal), with free shipping if you have Amazon Prime.

If you don’t have Amazon Prime, you can get a 30-day free trial using this link here. I will not lie, the free 2-day shipping, plus all of the free music and videos are totally worth it. I also now use it for books for my Kindle Paper White too, and it is honestly a life saver. They have a program called Kindle Unlimited where you can check out 10 books at a time, read them, and put them back in the kindle library. The program cost $7.99 a month, and you get the first 30 days for free with this link.

How do I read this post?

I recommend that you put the album on in the background, and read through it while listening to the track that I am talking about. It will help you understand what parts of the music I’m referring to when I talk about different instruments and different vocal parts. This is what I recommend for all of my song reviews

Day6 Remember Us: Youth Part 2 Track By Track:

아픈 길 (Painful Road/Path)

So I really like how this track starts slow and simple. Just a tambourine, and Wonpil’s voice. There is something to be said for very simple tracks like this. Personally, I am quite a fan of tracks like this, and I love how Day6 Remember Us: Youth Part 2 is opened this way. It allows the members of the group and their vocals to shine.

Honestly, I find it very interesting that they started off this album with a ballad. Most artists don’t do that, as it is seen as a risk. I love it. It’s different, and not easily done. As such, I’m quite impressed. Once you get to the second chorus I’m even more impressed. The group added in these gorgeous, yet simple harmonies to the song that help it build.

This song is a perfect example of how a song doesn’t have to be complicated to be a good song. In today’s era of computer generated music, it’s something we easily forget. They build the track with the basics, and the song still has movement and blends well. Job well done right from the start.

행복했던 알들이었다 (Days Gone By)

So, I have actually already gone and posted a reaction to this track. You can watch it here

https://youtu.be/0mTT-O5n2Ic

Now that I have had a chance to go back and listen to the track on its own, without the video. I must say, I am quite pleased! I love the harmonies throughout the track. The retro, 80’s sound to the keys and other instrumentation. It reminds me of the songs that I would listen to when I was little.

After the first chorus, that hold for the instrumentation to move from the chorus to the second verse is fantastic. It was extremely clean and well executed. Additionally, the harmonies through the track are great. Day6 has some very strong vocalists who can cover a number of different ranges, which definitely helps them to be successful.

Final thoughts? I’m a big fan of this track. It’s well done, like a steak on the grill for too long. It’s a catchy song.

두통 (Headache)

This song is a huge shift from the previous two tracks! This song has much more of a hard rock vibe than the previous two! I really like how they are covering a number of different areas of the rock genre throughout the course of this album. You can tell that they are really experimenting with sound.

The first thing that stuck out to me when listening to this track was the reverb harmonies. They were really interesting and different. They give the track a bit of a distorted feel. It’s neat and contrasts very nicely against their clean vocals throughout the track.

I actually really enjoy how intense the instrumentation is in this track. They contrast this nicely by creating these moments of silence for the drums, guitar and bass. It adds even more contrast and draws your attention back to the vocals. My favorite thing about Day6 is how clean they are. There is a lot going on in this song, but the music doesn’t sound muddy. They all play their instruments cleanly, and there is something to be said for that.

121U (Want To Want You)

Changing styles again! Yes! This song has a much lighter sound than the last track. I really like the guitar chords throughout the track. They are very simple, but clean. On top of that, the mixing of this track was done well. With a lot of bands, I’ve heard their audio go too bass heavy. Day6 hasn’t done that. You can still clearly hear the vocals, the harmonies and the higher tones overall.

Yet again, Day6 shows off their strong harmonization skills in this track. They’re clean and stable, and you can clearly hear the middle note, which is what usually gets lost when vocalists attempt to harmonize. It’s the hardest not to sustain, and maintain without getting pulled into the other parts. The way that they harmonize adds a level of complexity to all of their tracks, and gives it a distinct Day6 flair. Yet again, I’m a fan of this track.

완전 멋지잖아 (It’s Totally Cool/Because It’s So Cool)

I love how the track starts out! The octave jumps that take the pitch up directly into Wonpil’s falsetto are fantastic. It as a little bit of a swing vibe to the track. I love how when the octave drops they add those complex background harmonies back into the track.

This is honestly a really interesting track for a rock group. Yet again, it’s very early 90’s. Bring out the fluorescent windbreaker jackets and baggy pants! Even the rap style of the second verse is very Fresh Prince of Bel Air. This track is another nice nod to where music has been, while still maintaining its place in the 21st century.

마라톤 (Marathon)

Starting off really strong with a bit of a gospel feel! Let’s sing Alleluia, people. After all of the uptempo songs we have had, it’s nice that they brought the tempo back down. Per usual, I’m a fan of the relatively simple instrumentation. It has a nice, bouncy feel to it. This is feel is enhanced with the staccato chords on the guitar right before the first chorus.

If I had to describe this track, I would say it is a driving down the road on a warm spring day, easy listening song. The track is really cute, and I like the woodwind and brass sound to it. It gives it a bit of a big band sound. That is something that we haven’t heard from Day6 to date. This reinforces my thought that this album is them experimenting with different sounds.

Beautiful Feeling

Another down-tempo song. I love the light, simple, accented piano and acoustic guitar chords. When I hear songs that start like this, I know that the lyrics and the emotion they are trying to convey are the important part. The instrumentation alone gets across the feeling of trying to express a clean, pure feeling of love.

I must say, I am a big fan of how harmonies aren’t added to the track until right before the hook. It helps add force, and create a smooth transition into the hook. Before that, all of the background vocals were simply an octave above the main vocalist for that part. Since I’m talking about the vocals, in the second verse, there is a part where Jae is singing. He really belts out a well -executed vocal run, despite the fact that you can hear that it is at the top of his belt range before he needs to switch to falsetto. This adds emotion, and actually a little bit of desperation to the sound of the track. Like a feeling of having to say something no matter what the cost. Good job on that run, Jae.

K-Points: 287/5

I was not expecting a 100% retro comeback from Day6! I am not hating it at all. To be honest, I was secretly looking for something like this. I recently pulled out all of my old 80’s tunes and blared them through the house. This album is secretly what I was looking for without knowing that I was even looking for it. I really like every track on here. They are all extremely different sound-wise, but there is something cohesive about it. It’s fresh. It’s different and completely not what I was anticipating.

So, should you get a copy of this album? Honestly, I don’t think you can ever go wrong with a Day6 album. They are consistently clean and well-produced. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a bad track from them. As such, they are a good artist to add to any album collection. Should you stream it? To reflect my former comments. You can’t go wrong with Day6.
